Isle of New Orleans Tour
This tour extends the traditional Super City Tour to include an area and narration specific to Hurricane Katrina. The tour begins in the original city, the French Quarter, and travels to the Ninth Ward, one of many New Orleans neighborhoods devastated by the flooding caused by multiple levee breaks. Pass the house of the legendary rock and roll pianist Antoine Dominique "Fats" Domino, and learn of his personal journey through the storm. Under the shady oak trees of Esplanade Avenue, retrace the route taken by carriages of yesteryear to escape the summer heat. After visiting a unique above-ground cemetery, it’s on to City Park, at 1,300 acres one of the largest urban parks in the country, en route to Lake Pontchartrain. New Orleans is a city of neighborhoods and we will travel through many on this tour - Faubourg Marginy, Faubourg St. John, Lakeview, Carrollton, and Uptown. Finally, in the Carrollton section view Xavier University, founded by St. Katharine Drexel and presently the only historically black, Catholic University in the Western Hemisphere. Follow the path of the St. Charles Avenue streetcars (refurbished since the storm) past Tulane and Loyola Universities, across from Audubon Park, and the exclusive Garden District. This tour will also include a stop at a cemetery on Esplanade Avenue, a stop at City Park where guests may visit either Morning Call Café or the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, and a guided tour of the New Canal Lighthouse Museum on Lake Pontchartrain. This Lighthouse was destroyed during Katrina but reopened in May 2013.
