September is one of the best months for offshore fishing in Destin. Due to fishing regulations, the captains will focus on species that you can actually keep rather than catching fish you have to throw back. On a typical 8 hour charter, you'll catch snapper species such vermilion (mingo) snapper, red snapper, mangrove snapper, and lane snapper. Other popular catches include amberjack, triggerfish, and grouper around reefs and wrecks. Amberjack season opens September 1 through October 14 and triggerfish is August 1st through September 31st. Red Snapper season will be open from September 1st through October 4th.You'll also be trolling to catch king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, mahi-mahi, blackfin tuna, and occasionally wahoo. Please note that that the shorter trips under 6 hours will mainly focus on triggerfish and mingo snapper, but longer than 6 hours will give you more opportunity for pelagic species and bigger catches. Typically Warm water and active fish make September a productive month, offering a mix of great-eating reef fish and exciting offshore game fish on the same trip.
