Question: How much time should we spend at Crab Island?
Answer: The amount of time you spend at Crab Island really depends on the type of experience you’re seeking. For a majority of visitors, 3-4 hours is the most common time spent. If you’re visiting with kids, 4 hours is typically ideal, enough to explore, have fun, and avoid the exhaustion that comes from the heat and crowds. For those wanting a more immersive experience, including socializing, interacting with vendors, sunbathing, and exploring, a full day at Crab Island can be perfect. Just remember to come prepared: bring plenty of water, apply sunscreen frequently, and pack extra batteries for your phones. Since afternoon showers are common, it’s wise to have a backup plan in case you need to leave temporarily and return once the weather clears.
Question: Can you snorkel at Crab Island or is it too crowded?
Answer: You can snorkel at Crab Island, but I usually would not recommend it if snorkeling is the main reason you are getting out on the water. Crab Island is famous for floating, relaxing, and enjoying the atmosphere, not for having the best snorkeling. On busy summer days there can be hundreds of boats anchored there, along with people swimming, paddle boarding, and floating around, so there is a lot going on. The water is often clear enough to see the sandy bottom, fish, and the occasional crab, but because there is so much activity, the marine life is not nearly as abundant as you will find around the jetties or other dedicated snorkeling spots. If you put your mask on at Crab Island, you will probably see small fish swimming around and kids usually have fun looking for shells or hermit crabs, but it is not the kind of place where you spend an hour exploring underwater. If snorkeling is high on your vacation list, I would book a snorkeling tour or rent a boat and spend some time around the East Pass before heading over to Crab Island afterward. That gives you the best of both worlds. You get to experience some of the better underwater scenery and then finish the day relaxing at one of Destin's most famous spots. I have had plenty of visitors tell me that combination ended up being their favorite day of the trip because they were not trying to force Crab Island into something it really is not. It is an amazing place to enjoy the water, but there are definitely better places nearby if your goal is seeing marine life.
