Crab Island's water color changes mainly because of the tides. During an incoming tide, clear emerald-green Gulf water flows through the pass and into the area, creating the crystal-clear conditions people love. During an outgoing tide, darker bay water mixed with organic material and sediment flows out, making the water look greener, brownish, or brackish. Wind, boat traffic, and recent rainfall can also stir up sediment and reduce clarity. Because Crab Island sits where the Gulf and bay waters meet, conditions can change dramatically throughout the day. For the clearest water, visit during an incoming or high tide on a calm day.
