Most dolphin tour boats in Destin cruise much slower than people expect because these are generally sightseeing boats and want to ensure guest safety and maximize wildlife viewing opportunities. Large dolphin cruise boats (Southern Star, Olin Marler, Flippers) usually travel around 8–15 mph while searching for dolphins, sometimes reaching 15-20 mph when moving between Destin Harbor, East Pass, and the Gulf, depending on weather and water conditions. Smaller catamarans and pontoon-style dolphin tours typically maintain speeds between 10–20 mph, but always slow to idle whenever dolphins are spotted nearby, ensuring minimal disturbance to the animals. Speedboat dolphin tours (Hydrojet, SeaQuest, Screaming Eagle) are designed for excitement and can reach speeds of 30–40+ mph during the thrill-ride portions of the trip, but will slow down significantly when approaching dolphins. While some boats are capable of even higher speeds, all tours operate within Coast Guard regulations and at the captain’s discretion for safety.
