Absolutely. In fact, a lot of people are surprised by how many dolphins they see from a rental boat. Around here, they're wild animals, so nobody can guarantee you'll see them, but your odds are honestly pretty good. The nice thing about having your own boat is you're not on a schedule. If you spot dolphins in the distance, you can slow down and watch them for a few minutes instead of cruising past. We see them all over the harbor, around the East Pass, in Choctawhatchee Bay, and sometimes even near Crab Island. I'd recommend going out earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon if your schedule allows. Boat traffic is usually lighter, the water is calmer, and dolphins seem to be more active. That said, I've seen them in the middle of a busy summer afternoon too. Just remember they're protected wildlife, so keep your distance and let them come to you if they're interested. Every now and then they'll swim right alongside the boat, and those are the moments people remember long after their vacation is over. If your main goal is seeing as many dolphins as possible, a dedicated dolphin cruise is still your best bet since the captains are out there every day and know where they've been hanging out. But if you're renting a boat anyway, there's a really good chance you'll get to see some without booking a separate tour.
