Yes, it absolutely can, and it is something most visitors never think about before booking. Around Destin, the tide affects both the water movement and the visibility, especially in places like the East Pass and around the jetties where a lot of snorkeling trips go. On a strong outgoing tide, the current can move a little faster and stir things up, which sometimes makes the water look less clear than it did an hour earlier. On the other hand, when the conditions line up with a gentler tide and light winds, the water can be incredibly clear, making it much easier to spot fish, crabs, and other marine life. That said, the tide is only one piece of the puzzle. Wind direction, recent rain, wave conditions, and even boat traffic can have just as much of an impact on what you see underwater. I have seen days with a less than perfect tide that still had fantastic visibility, and I have also seen days with an ideal tide where the wind made the water a little cloudy. The nice thing about going with a local snorkeling charter is that the captains pay attention to all of those conditions, not just the tide chart. If one area is not looking its best, they will often choose another nearby spot where the water is clearer. That is one of the biggest advantages of taking a guided trip instead of trying to pick a snorkeling location on your own. You are relying on someone who has already been out there and knows where the best conditions are that day.
