During the summer, the water is honestly one of the reasons people love snorkeling in Destin. It is usually warm enough that you can get in without thinking twice, and after the first few seconds it feels really comfortable. Most people expect that big shock you get when jumping into a cold lake, but that almost never happens here during the summer months. By June, the Gulf has warmed up quite a bit, and by July and August the water often feels more like a refreshing escape from the Florida heat than something cold. If you have been sitting on the beach in 90 degree weather, getting into the water usually feels amazing. Kids tend to jump right in without any hesitation, and adults are usually right behind them. The only time I hear someone say the water felt chilly is if it has been several days of strong east winds or after a heavy rain, but even then it is not what most people would consider cold. If you are taking a snorkeling tour, you are also moving around, swimming, and floating, so your body adjusts very quickly. I tell visitors not to over think the water temperature because it is rarely the thing people remember afterward. They remember spotting colorful fish, swimming through the clear water, or watching their kids get excited about seeing marine life for the first time. If you are comfortable swimming in a pool during the summer, you will almost certainly be comfortable snorkeling in Destin. In fact, many people end up staying in the water longer than they planned because it feels so nice once they are out there.
