That is a really good question because the answer depends on the tour you book, and it is something a lot of people overlook. Most snorkeling trips in Destin are designed so you spend the majority of the experience at the snorkeling location rather than cruising around. The boat ride is usually just long enough (10-15 min) to reach the best spot, and since many of those locations are only a short distance from the harbor, you are not spending half the trip getting there. Once the captain drops anchor, you typically have plenty of time to get in the water, explore, and snorkel at your own pace. Some tours even visit more than one location if the conditions are good. If your main goal is snorkeling, I would always check the tour description or ask how much actual water time is included because every company is a little different. Some trips combine snorkeling with dolphin watching or a stop at Crab Island, which means your time is split between several activities. Others are focused almost entirely on snorkeling. Personally, I like the dedicated snorkeling trips because you never feel rushed. You can get comfortable with your gear, spend time looking for fish around the rocks or reef, and climb back on the boat whenever you are ready for a break. The boat itself becomes a nice place to relax between swims. In my experience, most guests come back saying they were surprised by how much time they actually spent in the water. The ride out is enjoyable, but it is really just the beginning of the adventure rather than the main event.
