Yes, for most people it is, and that is one of the biggest misconceptions I hear from first time visitors. You do not have to be an excellent swimmer to enjoy a snorkeling trip in Destin. Most snorkeling charters provide flotation vests or belts, so you are not expected to tread water the whole time. In fact, many guests spend most of their time simply floating on the surface while looking down through their mask. That takes a lot of the effort out of snorkeling and lets you focus on what is below you instead of worrying about staying afloat. I always recommend telling the crew before you get in the water if you are not a confident swimmer. They do this every day, and they are great about helping beginners, making sure your gear fits correctly, and pointing you toward the calmer areas around the boat. There is no shame in taking things slowly. You can stay close to the boat, get comfortable breathing through the snorkel, and head back aboard whenever you want to take a break. One thing I have noticed over the years is that people are usually much more nervous before they get in than they are once they are floating. After a few minutes, they realize it is a very relaxed experience. As long as you choose a reputable tour, wear the flotation equipment they provide if you need it, and follow the crew's instructions, most people with average swimming ability have a fantastic time. I have seen plenty of guests who were convinced they would never enjoy snorkeling end up asking where they could go again before their vacation was over.
