If I had to pick the best months, I would probably say May, June, and then again in September and early October. Those are the times when you often get that beautiful clear water that Destin is famous for, especially if the weather has been calm for a few days. The reason I do not automatically say the middle of summer is because water clarity is not just about the season. Wind has a much bigger impact than people realize. You can have a perfect day in July with incredible visibility, then a couple of windy days roll through and the water becomes noticeably cloudier. The same thing can happen in the spring or fall. That is why locals pay attention to the weather more than the calendar. If the Gulf has been calm and there has not been much rain, there is a good chance the visibility will be excellent regardless of the month. One thing I always tell visitors is not to judge the snorkeling conditions by looking at the beach. Sometimes the water near shore looks a little murky, but once the boat takes you to the snorkeling area, it is much clearer. Local captains know where the best visibility is on any given day, and they will often change locations if another spot is looking better. If your vacation dates are flexible and seeing the clearest water possible is your top priority, I would lean toward late spring or early fall. You usually get warm water, smaller crowds, and some of the nicest snorkeling conditions of the entire year, which makes for a really memorable experience.
