It is possible, but I would not let that worry you because it is much less common than people think. The vast majority of people who go snorkeling in Destin never see a shark at all. What you are much more likely to see are schools of fish, crabs, hermit crabs, rays, and all kinds of smaller marine life around the rocks and reefs. Every once in a while someone will spot a small shark in the distance, but they are usually species that are not interested in people and are simply passing through. Remember, these are wild waters, so there is always a chance of seeing just about anything that lives in the Gulf, but it is definitely not something that happens on most trips. The captains are also out there every day, and they pay close attention to what is going on in the water. If they ever saw something that made them uncomfortable, they would not send guests into that area. Safety is always their first priority. One thing I tell visitors is not to spend the whole trip thinking about sharks because you will miss everything else. Most people are so busy watching colorful fish swim around the jetties or looking for sand dollars on the bottom that they completely forget they were even worried. After talking to thousands of guests over the years, I can honestly say I have heard far more stories about people seeing dolphins or sea turtles than sharks. If someone comes back saying they saw a shark, it is usually because they feel like they won the wildlife lottery, not because it was a scary experience.
