For most people, especially first time snorkelers, I would actually give the edge to a catamaran. The biggest reason is stability. Catamarans have a wider stance on the water, so they do not rock as much as many smaller boats. That makes it easier to put your gear on, sit down while adjusting your mask, and climb in and out of the water without feeling like the boat is moving under your feet. If you are someone who gets a little nervous on boats or is worried about seasickness, that extra stability can make a noticeable difference. That said, smaller boats have their own advantages too. They can usually carry fewer passengers, which often means a more personal experience. You are not waiting as long for everyone to get in the water, and the crew has a little more time to answer questions or help you if it is your first time snorkeling. Some smaller boats can also get into tighter areas depending on the conditions, although that really depends on the location. Personally, I would not choose a snorkeling trip based only on the type of boat. I would pay much more attention to the crew, the size of the group, and where they plan to snorkel. A great captain on a smaller boat will almost always give you a better experience than an average crew on a larger one. If you are traveling with young kids, grandparents, or anyone who appreciates a smoother ride, though, a catamaran is usually a safe bet and tends to feel a little more comfortable from the moment you leave the dock until you head back to the marina.
