The good news is that seaweed is usually much less of an issue in Destin than it is in places farther south like parts of Mexico or the Caribbean. During the summer, you may see patches of seaweed floating on the surface, especially if the wind has been blowing from the south for a few days, but it is rarely enough to ruin a snorkeling trip. Most of the time you simply swim around it or through a small patch and keep going. Once you put your face in the water, you are usually focused on the fish and the underwater scenery instead of the seaweed. Some days there is hardly any at all, while other days you might notice a few scattered clumps drifting by. It changes from week to week depending on the weather and currents. One thing I have noticed is that people often worry about seaweed because they see a few patches from the beach, but once they get out to the snorkeling area, it ends up being much less noticeable. Local captains pay attention to those conditions every day, and if one spot has more floating seaweed than usual, they will often choose another location where the water is cleaner. If you happen to catch a day with a little extra seaweed, I would not let it discourage you. It is just part of being in the Gulf, and it usually has very little impact on the overall experience. In my opinion, water clarity and wind conditions make a much bigger difference than seaweed when it comes to having a great day snorkeling in Destin.
