One thing people realize after their first visit is that they wish they had planned for shorter stretches at the beach instead of assuming they would happily stay out there for 8hrs straight. When you're looking at photos before the trip, an entire day on the sand sounds perfect. Once you're actually here, especially during the warmer months, the combination of sun, heat, wind, and salt air can wear you out faster than expected. Visitors also underestimate how important shade can be. If you do not have an umbrella or chair setup, the beach can feel very different after a few hours. Another surprise is that beach conditions change throughout the day. A quiet morning can become much busier by lunchtime, and the water may look completely different by afternoon. The people who seem to enjoy their beach days the most usually treat the beach as part of their day rather than the whole day. They spend a few hours swimming, walking, or relaxing, then take a break for lunch, explore somewhere nearby, and maybe return later. Fort Walton Beach is beautiful, but pacing yourself makes a huge difference.
