Question: What should I wear for a deep sea fishing charter?
Answer:
Question: How much of the trip is actually spent fishing versus riding?
Answer: That depends on the length of the charter, but I think most first time visitors are pleasantly surprised by how much time they actually spend with a line in the water. On a typical Destin charter, the captain is not trying to give you a sightseeing cruise. The goal is to get you to productive fishing grounds as efficiently as possible so you can spend the majority of the trip fishing. On a shorter 4 hour charter, you might spend anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes total riding to and from the fishing spots, depending on where the fish are that day. The rest of the trip is usually dedicated to fishing, with the captain moving to different locations if the bite slows down. On longer trips, you may have a longer run offshore, but you also have a lot more fishing time, so the percentage of the day spent actively fishing is often even better. One thing many people do not realize is that the boat ride is part of the experience. It is common to see dolphins, flying fish, sea turtles, and incredible views of the Gulf while heading to the next spot. The captain is also watching the electronics, looking for bait, and deciding where to stop next, so the trip is never really on pause. If your main concern is getting the most fishing time possible, I would recommend booking at least a 6 hour charter. It gives the captain more flexibility, allows for more time with lines in the water, and usually creates a much more relaxed pace than trying to fit everything into a shorter trip.
