They are actually 2 completely different experiences, and if you asked me to compare them, I would say it is almost like comparing freshwater fishing to deep sea fishing. Bay fishing takes place in the calmer waters of Choctawhatchee Bay and around the harbor, where you are usually targeting species like Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, and Sheepshead depending on the season. The boat rides are shorter, the water is generally smoother, and it is a great option for families with younger kids or anyone who is worried about seasickness. Offshore fishing is all about heading into the Gulf in search of larger species like Red Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, King Mackerel, and many others when they are in season. The fish are often bigger, the fight can be more intense, and there is always the excitement of not knowing what might come over the rail next. The trade off is that you are spending more time in open water, so the conditions can be rougher depending on the weather. I usually tell first time visitors to think about the type of day they want. If you are looking for a relaxed trip with plenty of action and a comfortable ride, bay fishing is hard to beat. If catching larger fish and experiencing the Gulf is on your bucket list, then offshore fishing is probably the better choice. Neither one is better than the other. I enjoy both experiences and it really comes down to what fish I'd like to eat that day, and I do love snapper!
