If you asked 10 experienced captains in Destin what their favorite departure time is, I think most of them would tell you they like getting out really early (5-6am). There are a few reasons for that. The Gulf is often calmer during the morning, especially in the summer before the afternoon sea breeze picks up, which makes for a more comfortable ride offshore. Early departures also give captains more flexibility if they need to change locations or spend extra time on a productive spot without worrying about getting back before dark. Another advantage is that you are usually one of the first boats to reach the fishing grounds. While fish can bite at any time of the day, many captains like arriving before the area gets busier with other boats. That does not mean afternoon trips cannot be excellent. I have seen plenty of afternoons where the fishing was outstanding, especially when tides, current, or weather conditions lined up just right. The truth is that experienced captains are not chasing a specific clock as much as they are paying attention to conditions. They look at wind, tides, water temperature, bait movement, and recent catches, then build the trip around what gives their guests the best opportunity to catch fish. If I were booking my own trip and had complete flexibility, I would probably choose an early morning departure every time. The ride is often smoother, the temperatures are more comfortable, and you have the entire day ahead of you. It is not a guarantee that you will catch more fish, but it does tend to create a more enjoyable experience from the moment you leave the dock until you head back to the marina.
