In my opinion, if your budget allows it, a 6 hour charter is usually worth the extra money. The biggest reason is that it gives the captain a lot more flexibility throughout the day. On a 4 hour trip, a decent portion of your time is spent running to and from the fishing grounds, so you simply have fewer opportunities to fish. If the first spot is slow, the captain may only have time to try 1 or 2 more locations before heading back to the dock. With a 6 hour trip, there is much less pressure. The captain can make several moves if needed, target different species, and spend more time where the fish are actively biting instead of rushing from place to place. That does not mean a 4 hour trip is a bad choice. If you have younger kids, first time anglers, or you are mainly looking for a fun family outing, a shorter trip is often the perfect fit. Most families catch fish, have a great time, and leave with some wonderful memories. But if your goal is to maximize your chances of filling the fish box or hooking into something that everyone will be talking about for years, I almost always recommend the 6 hour option. Over the years, I have heard far more people say they wished they had booked a longer charter than people who felt like they spent too much time on the water. Those extra 2 hours often make a much bigger difference than visitors expect.
