That is probably the question that separates a good fishing trip from a great one, and the answer has a lot less to do with luck than most people think. The best captains are constantly adjusting to what is happening that day instead of fishing the same spots over and over. They are paying attention to water temperature, currents, bait movement, weather, and what has been biting over the last few days. If one reef is not producing, they already have several backup spots in mind. Experience really matters because many of the top captains have spent decades learning how fish behave during different seasons and conditions. Another thing people overlook is how often a captain fishes. Someone who is on the water five or six days a week usually has a much better idea of where the fish are than someone who only runs occasional trips. The type of boat and equipment can make a difference too, but not nearly as much as the person behind the wheel. I always tell visitors not to judge a charter by the biggest boat or the cheapest price. Instead, read the recent reviews and pay attention to comments about how hard the captain and crew worked to find fish, how knowledgeable they were, and whether they changed locations when the bite slowed down. Those are the captains who consistently put people on fish. At the end of the day, nobody can guarantee a full cooler because fishing is still fishing, but an experienced local captain can dramatically improve your chances simply because they know how to adapt when conditions change. That is usually the biggest difference between an average charter and one that people cannot stop talking about after they get home. That's why I always tell people who want to bring their boat to Destin to just spend the money hiring a charter because it's not as easy as it looks.
