Captains often look for changes in dolphin behavior to determine whether they're feeding or simply passing through an area. Feeding dolphins may surface more frequently, change directions often, or stay concentrated in one location while chasing schools of baitfish. You might also notice diving seabirds, fish jumping, or dolphins working together to herd prey. Dolphins that are simply traveling usually move steadily in the same direction with fewer sudden changes in behavior.
