Many private charter boats in Destin can physically hold more than 6 people, but if the boat is operating as an uninspected passenger vessel with a licensed captain, federal regulations limit it to 6 paying passengers. That rule is commonly called the 6 pack rule, and it applies to thousands of charter boats across the country. It is not because the boat is too small or unsafe. It is simply the type of certification the vessel operates under. If you have a group larger than 6, there are still plenty of options. Some boats are Coast Guard inspected and certified to carry larger groups, while others operate as bareboat charters. With a true bareboat charter, you are renting the boat instead of hiring a charter service, so different rules apply and larger groups are often allowed as long as the boat's maximum capacity is not exceeded. That is why you might see 2 boats that look almost identical, yet 1 is limited to 6 guests while the other can legally take 12 or more. Before you book, I always recommend asking whether the trip is a traditional captained charter or a bareboat charter. That one question usually explains the passenger limit and helps you choose the right option for the size of your group.
