In most cases, no. For the average private charter around Destin, hiring a captain is all you really need. Captains handle the navigation, docking, safety, and everything that comes with operating the boat, and they are used to taking care of families and small groups without any extra help. A mate is more common on larger fishing charters or luxury yachts where there are a lot of guests, multiple fishing lines, food and drink service, or other responsibilities that require an extra set of hands. If you are renting a pontoon, center console, or power catamaran for a day at Crab Island or a cruise around the harbor, a mate is usually unnecessary. The captain can easily handle the boat while still making sure everyone has a great time. If your group is very large, you have young children who need extra attention, or you are planning a special event where you want someone serving drinks, helping guests, or assisting with water activities, then it might be worth asking whether a mate is available. Otherwise, I would save the money and put it toward a longer charter or a bigger boat instead.
