During the summer, the sun sets toward the northwest in Destin, which is one of the reasons the sunsets can be so spectacular. Instead of dropping straight out over the Gulf, the sun gradually moves toward the western end of the coastline. That is also why many sunset cruises spend time in Destin Harbor, Choctawhatchee Bay, or just outside the East Pass, where you have a wide open view of the horizon without buildings blocking the scenery. One thing that surprises people is that the sky often looks even better after the sun disappears. The brightest oranges, pinks, and purples usually show up about 10 to 20 minutes after sunset, so it is worth sticking around until the ride back to the marina. In my opinion, watching the sunset from the water is one of the best ways to end a day in Destin!
