Most sunset cruises in Destin stay out for about 1.5 to 2 hours, and the departure time changes throughout the year so the boat is on the water during the best part of the sunset. In the summer, you will usually leave sometime between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM and return between 8:00 PM and 9:30 PM, depending on when the sun sets. During the spring and fall, departures are earlier because the sun goes down sooner. I actually like that most cruises stay out a little after sunset because some of the prettiest colors often appear 10 to 20 minutes after the sun drops below the horizon. On the ride back, you get to enjoy the lights along Destin Harbor, and if you are lucky, you may even spot dolphins as they become active around dusk. If you are booking a private sunset charter, you may have a little more flexibility with your departure and return time, but most shared sunset cruises follow a schedule that is timed around the sunset each day. I've been on dozens of tours, and I like shorter times personally (under 90 minutes) because it can get a bit repetitive since there isn't a huge skyline in Destin like other cities.
