Free-roaming chickens have become one of Key West's most recognizable symbols. Descended from domestic birds brought to the island generations ago, they now wander freely throughout neighborhoods, parks, and streets. Although they surprise many first-time visitors, the chickens are protected by local ordinances and are considered part of Key West's unique character.
