During the 1800s, Key West became one of the wealthiest cities in the United States because of its strategic location along busy shipping routes. Ships that wrecked on nearby reefs created a thriving salvage industry known as "wrecking," and much of that history is preserved through museums, historic sites, and local storytelling today.
