Staying near the marina in Key West puts you in a really walkable spot, and you can do a lot more on foot. You can easily walk to a bunch of the main boat tour departures, so anything like dolphin cruises, snorkeling trips, or sunset sails from the harbor area is usually just a short walk away. That alone covers a big part of what people come to Key West for, and you do not need to deal with parking or driving at all. From there, Old Town is very walkable too, so you can drift over toward Duval Street, Mallory Square, and the surrounding streets pretty easily, depending on how far you want to go. What I usually tell people is the marina area works well because your main activities are right there, especially anything on the water. You can do a boat tour in the morning, come back, and still walk to food, shops, or waterfront spots without needing a car or rides the whole time.
