For a first visit to 30A, I would lean toward a shared tour unless you already know you want a quieter, more personalized day. A shared dolphin cruise or sightseeing trip is a great introduction because everything is planned for you. You just show up, hop on the boat, and let the crew handle the rest. It also gives you a good feel for Choctawhatchee Bay and the area without having to make a lot of decisions. If you have never been out on the water here before, that is usually all you need to decide what you might want to do next. A private boat is a great option too, especially if you are traveling with family or another couple and want the ability to move at your own pace. You can spend more time in places you enjoy, avoid feeling like you are on a schedule, and enjoy any atmosphere you would like. The tradeoff is that it costs more, so it makes the most sense if that extra flexibility is important to you. I have found that many first time visitors book a shared tour, realize how much they enjoy being on the water, and then come back on another trip and splurge on a private charter.
