Keep your first boat experience as simple as possible because Hilton Head is a great place to ease into being on the water. A dolphin cruise or a sightseeing boat tour is usually where I point first timers because you are not expected to do anything except relax and enjoy the ride. The captain handles everything, the pace is comfortable, and you get to see the marshes, creeks, and open water without worrying about navigating or keeping up with a group. Most people are surprised by how calm the ride feels, especially when the boat stays in the protected waters around the island. Along the way you have a good chance of seeing dolphins, birds, and other wildlife, but even if the dolphins decide not to show up right away, the scenery alone makes the trip worthwhile. After you have done that once, you will have a much better idea of whether you want to try something more active like kayaking or even a private boat charter on another visit. I have had plenty of friends visit Hilton Head who were nervous about getting on a boat for the first time, and almost every one of them stepped off wondering why they waited so long.
