A little afternoon wind is actually pretty common on Hilton Head, so it usually does not mean your plans are ruined. Most boat tours still run as scheduled because the captains are used to changing conditions and know which areas stay more protected if the breeze picks up. Instead of heading into rougher water, they may adjust the route and spend more time in calmer creeks, rivers, or marsh areas where the ride stays comfortable. The only time you are likely to see cancellations is if there are thunderstorms, lightning, or winds that make it unsafe to be on the water. Safety always comes first, and the local captains are generally very cautious about that. I always tell people not to panic if they wake up and see trees moving or flags blowing because what you experience on shore is not always what the ride feels like once you get out on the water. Some of my favorite trips have actually been on breezy afternoons because the heat is not quite as intense and there is usually a nice breeze while the boat is moving. If you are concerned about the forecast, booking earlier in the day is never a bad idea since mornings are often calmer, but I would not automatically cancel an afternoon tour just because it is windy.
