Hilton Head has long maintained development regulations designed to preserve its natural scenery. Height restrictions, tree preservation efforts, and careful planning have helped prevent the large skyline seen in many other beach destinations. As a result, much of the island remains shaded by maritime forests, with buildings blending into the surrounding landscape rather than dominating it.
