The easiest boat experience around St Pete Beach if you have never been on the Gulf before is usually a calm water dolphin cruise or a small sightseeing boat tour that sticks more to the bay and Intracoastal instead of heading straight into open Gulf waters. That setup matters a lot because the Gulf itself can get choppier depending on wind, while the bay side around St Petersburg tends to feel much smoother and more beginner friendly. On these trips you are not doing anything other than sitting back, so there is no pressure about steering, navigating, or figuring anything out on the fly, which is a big reason first timers tend to enjoy them. What makes it especially good for a first experience is the pace. The boats usually cruise at a comfortable speed, stop or slow down when dolphins are spotted, and give you time to just take in the views of the shoreline and water instead of rushing from one thing to another. You also get a feel for how you personally handle being on the water without committing to a long or complicated outing. If you are a little unsure about motion or comfort, I usually tell people to avoid anything fast paced like jet skis or offshore trips for the first time and start with a guided cruise instead. It is the kind of experience where even if you are not sure what to expect, you end up feeling comfortable within the first (10min) once you realize how relaxed the ride actually is. After that, if you enjoy it, you can always step up to more adventurous options on another day, but for a first Gulf experience, a calm dolphin or sightseeing cruise is usually the easiest and most enjoyable starting point.
