Barrier islands such as St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, and Shell Key were formed over thousands of years as sand accumulated along Florida's Gulf Coast. Today, they help protect the mainland from wave energy while creating the beaches, inlets, bays, and waterways that support many of the region's boating and wildlife experiences.
