You might be surprised by how many fish you can see at Crab Island because the water is usually shallow and clear enough to spot them swimming around your feet. The species you see most often are mullet, pinfish, pigfish, sheepshead, and schools of small baitfish that gather around boats and anchored pontoons. If you are near the edge of the sandbar where the water gets a little deeper, you may also spot redfish, speckled trout, ladyfish, blue runners, and even the occasional stingray. Every now and then someone will see a small blacktip or bull shark, but that is uncommon and they are typically just passing through. If you want a good view, bring a pair of polarized sunglasses because they make it much easier to see fish beneath the surface. Kids especially love standing in the shallow water and watching schools of fish swim around their legs. Bring some frozen pees with you and watch them eat right out of your hand. It's something fun to keep the kids occupied. One thing to remember is that Crab Island is not a coral reef, so you are not going to see colorful tropical fish everywhere.
