Shell Island is protected as part of a coastal conservation area, preserving its beaches, dunes, and wildlife habitat. Because there are no hotels, restaurants, or roads on the island, visitors experience one of the most natural stretches of Gulf coastline in the region while enjoying swimming, shelling, snorkeling, and wildlife viewing. The eastern end of Shell Island is also property of Tyndall Air Force Base, making it inaccessible to visitors.
