Most of the time around Panama City Beach, dolphins will come close to the boat on their own. On a typical tour, you will often see them anywhere from just a few boat lengths away up to right alongside or slightly behind the wake, especially when they are curious or feeding in the area. They are wild animals though, so it is never something the crew can control or guarantee. What usually drives how close they get is what they are already doing in that moment. If they are traveling through the area, you might see them surface a bit farther out as they move along their path. If they are feeding or playing in calmer bay water, they sometimes come surprisingly close and ride the boat wake or surface near the stern for a few seconds at a time. Captains do not chase or force interactions, they simply slow down or position the boat in areas where dolphins are already active, and that is what creates those close viewing moments.
