If dolphins are not immediately showing up, captains rely on a mix of local knowledge, recent sightings, and real time conditions on the water. Most of them have a pretty strong sense of where pods have been active that day or even earlier that morning, so the first move is usually heading toward those known hot zones, often around St Andrews Bay channels, Shell Island edges, or nearby shallow feeding areas where dolphins tend to travel regularly. If they are not finding activity in the first area, they will adjust based on what the water is telling them. That can include things like bird activity on the surface, bait fish movement, water clarity, and even what other boats in the area are doing. A lot of dolphin finding more involves reading patterns in the environment rather than just covering distance, so captains are constantly scanning while they cruise slowly through different sections.
