Most dolphin tours around Panama City Beach do not go very far offshore in the way people sometimes imagine, especially the standard sightseeing cruises. A lot of the time, you are staying in a mix of St Andrews Bay, near Shell Island, and just inside or along the edge of the Gulf depending on conditions that day. If you do head into the open Gulf, it is usually a relatively short distance from shore, more like a nearshore zone rather than a deep offshore run. On a usual trip, captains will stay within a comfortable range where they can still easily spot dolphins, manage the ride for safety, and adjust quickly if weather or water conditions change. That usually means you are not going miles and miles out to sea. Instead, you are working a few key areas where dolphins naturally travel between feeding and resting zones.
