Yes. Shell Island has no permanent facilities, so visitors should plan to bring their own shade if they expect to spend several hours on the beach. There are no pavilions, shelters, restaurants, or shaded picnic areas on the island, and natural shade is very limited. Families often bring beach umbrellas, pop-up canopies (if permitted by their transportation provider), hats, and plenty of sunscreen to stay comfortable during their visit.
