Some local dolphins can be individually recognized by experienced guides using features such as dorsal-fin shape, scars, and markings. Dolphins can develop distinctive fins over their lifetimes, allowing researchers and knowledgeable guides to distinguish individuals rather than treating every sighting as an anonymous dolphin. The local tourism bureau even suggests asking guides to help identify individual bottlenose dolphins.
