Yes. Okaloosa Island occupies part of Santa Rosa Island, the barrier island separating the Gulf of Mexico from Santa Rosa Sound. That geography gives visitors Gulf beaches on the south side and calmer Sound-side water to the north. It also explains why getting between mainland Fort Walton Beach and the beach requires crossing Brooks Bridge.
