In January, New Orleans swamp tours still have active wildlife, with birds and mammals being the most dependable sightings. Around Jean Lafitte, Barataria, and Honey Island Swamp, guides commonly point out great blue herons, snowy egrets, white ibises, brown pelicans, nutria, raccoons, and turtles along the banks. American alligators are still part of the habitat, but colder weather makes them less active, so sightings depend more on sun and temperature than they do in spring or summer.
