Yes, it's highly recommended to purchase the damage protection when you're renting a boat, especially if you are not familiar with the water ways or boating in congest areas where there is a greater risk of collisions. Damage protection is not insurance so it won't cover injuries or total losses, but will cover damages of any kind up to a certain amount - enough to cover the most common repairs. Another benefit to this is that you won't have to leave a security deposit which in some cases can exceed $500 or more.
