The beach with the most public parking in Destin is the Henderson Beach State Park, which has 304 parking spaces, with James Lee Park in second with 171. I've included below all of the public beaches and their parking counts.
- Henderson Beach State Park: Henderson Beach State Park is one of the largest and most popular public beaches in Destin, offering over a mile of pristine white sand, nature trails, picnic pavilions, restrooms, outdoor showers, and beach wheelchair access. The park has more than 300 parking spaces, making it the easiest place to find parking compared to other beaches. It can reach capacity during weekends and holidays in the summer, so arriving before 9am is highly recommended. A small state park admission fee is required. The cost is $6 per vehicle (2 to 8 people), $4 for a single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle and $2 for pedestrians, bicyclists, extra passengers, or passengers riding with someone who has an Annual Individual Entrance Pass. However, it's completely worth it considering how few parking spaces there is for Public Beach Accesses during peak season. One word of advice is to NOT park across the street (Walmart and Stripe Mall Parking Lot). They now tow cars for people who use it as beach parking and aggressively stepped it up over the years. - James Lee Park: Located on Scenic Highway 98 near the Destin and Miramar Beach line, James Lee Park is one of the area's best family beaches, also known as the "Crab Trap" access since the restaurant sits right in the middle. Amenities include covered pavilions, picnic tables, a playground, restrooms, outdoor showers, and lifeguards during peak season. There are even vendors offering kayaks and jet skis on most days. The park offers approximately 170 parking spaces, making it one of the largest free public parking lots in the area. During summer, parking often fills by 9am, especially on weekends. - June White Decker Beach Park: This centrally located beach park offers wide public beach access with restrooms, outdoor showers, and convenient access to restaurants and hotels. There are more than 75 parking spaces, but they fill very quickly during spring break and throughout the summer. Arriving before 9am provides the best chance of finding a spot. The earlier the better. I typically send someone from my family at 7am to grab a spot, and then have them uber back home. The address is 950 Scenic Highway 98, Destin, FL 32541.
- Norriego Point Beach Park: Situated at Destin Pass near HarborWalk Village, Norriego Point is known for calm water, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and watching boats enter and leave the harbor. The park has 27 parking spaces, along with additional roadside parking when available. Because of its popularity with both locals and visitors, parking fills very early on busy beach days. Again, I would make sure to get there very early to ensure a spot. If you want to show up later, you might as well get an uber instead to avoid the hassle of waiting for a spot. While there are other beaches to note, they have under 10 parking spots and generally full throughout the day even into the evenings and slower times of the year. These accesses are only good for guests staying in nearby condos.
A few additional tips:
- While the mornings are really busy, parking opens up around 3-4pm which is another window to grab a spot for a sunset stroll.
- If you want to avoid the hassle, book an uber or lyft. If you like to sleep in on your vacation, this is the way to go.
- If you are staying nearby, there is golf cart parking at most beach accesses and these tend to fill up last. Renting a golf cart could be ideal for better chances of getting parking.
- Do not park in areas outside of the beach access unless it's clearly designated for public parking. You will get towed and that won't be a fun experience.
