Laura: A Creole Plantation Tour From New Orleans By Grayline Tours

Transportation From NOLA Included!

Enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Pontchartrain as you cross the Bonnet Carre Spillway (the flood outlet of the Mississippi River). Travel back in time to Laura: A Creole Plantation, an operating sugar farm built in 1805. Laura, a Creole Plantation, offers what has been called “the best history tour in the U.S.” Personal stories, based on thousands of pages of documents discovered in archives in France, throughout the U.S., Civil War Pension records and Laura Locoul Gore’s “Memories of the Old Plantation Home,” detail 4 generations of Laura’s Créole family, both free and enslaved. The fully guided experience includes the Big House, gardens and the original 1840s slave cabins in which the West-African folktales of Compair Lapin (later known as Br'er Rabbit) were recorded over 140 years ago.

Laura Plantation was awarded the "Top Travel Attraction in Louisiana" by the Louisiana Travel Promotion Association in 2007. It was also listed among "the top 25 most popular house museums in the U.S." by the American Academy of Architecture and Design.

The Tour Guides Really Know Their Stuff

Let me first begin by saying this tour was the highlight of our vacation. Our tour guide, Jay, told the story so well and was very passionate about the plantation. The story of "Laura" was well told! The grounds were clean and peppered with fruit trees - they even let us take some delicious oranges back with us. Some of the slave quarters were still fully intact and the plantation home was well preserved. Although we don't speak french, they had french speaking tour guides available which was nice for international guests. And lastly, thanks to Grayline for timely transportation and a friendly driver. It was a great experience and would tell everyone to take the trip!

Going on this tour made me feel like I was going back in time for a day. I'm a history buff, and seeing the plantation in such great shape, with all the original slave cabins was more than I could ask for.
