At Laura: A Creole Plantation (1805), step beyond the myths of the American South and walk in the footsteps of 4 generations of one Louisiana Creole family, both free and enslaved. Immerse yourself in a story told by knowledgeable, passionate guides about REAL people, free and enslaved, and how they REALLY lived on this circa 1805 sugar plantation. Tours recount first-hand, personal stories discovered in the U.S. and France of four generations of free and enslaved Louisiana Créole women. Fully guided experience includes the Big House, gardens and original 1840s slave cabins, inhabited by descendants of enslaved West-Africans until 1977. Museum exhibit "From the Big House to the Quarters: Slavery on Laura Plantation" presents detailed biographies of enslaved women and children, as well as the enslaved men who escaped the farm to fight in the Union Army. The ever-evolving story transports you beyond the myths of the American South into the lost world of Louisiana Créoles. Visit this historic sugar farmstead and experience what has been called “the best history tour in the U.S.”

It was interesting to hear about the life of the people who lived there and how different things were back in the early 1900s and 1800s.

    RE: Laura Plantaion

We enjoyed the tour immensely. Our tour guide was quite well informed. He was willing to answer questions and encouraged participation. The little gift shop was filled with books suitable for the young as well as adults. The area is filled with various plantations on both sides of the Mississippi. I highly encourage the tour. The tour is also offered in French.

    Loved our tour!

We had a fabulous time at Laura. We had a group of 13 with half kids and adults. The kids (ages 9-15) were stuck to our guide like glue. The guide was top notch. He was thorough with his presentation, yet speedy enough we didn't melt in the sweltering heat. They way they present the tour and history is remarkable. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful site and taking the tour.
