Gulf Shores Museum Visitors Guide

The Gulf Shores Museum was once a beach house owned by a family from Mobile, Alabama, that dates back to the days before World War II. This building was donated to the city after Hurricane Frederic in 1979, and opened in 1999 to the public as the Gulf Shores Museum. Now, this historic home is full of interactive displays, maps, photos, artifacts, music, and so much more!

One of the main highlights of this museum is their incredible Hurricane Exhibit, which has unbelievable archived footage of Hurricane Ivan. Other popular exhibits include the “Portrait of a Fishing Village Exhibit,” and the “Drawing a Line in the Sand Exhibit,” which goes over the evolution of this coastal city and the people that inhabited it. This museum also has seasonal and rotating exhibits, which means each trip to the museum brings something new to the table!

Another fun feature of this marvelous museum, is that many parts of the museum itself are historic pieces donated by locals. For example, the Oyster Bay Baptist Church donated their steeple, which was built back in 1953! Nelson’s Boat Yard donated a 40-foot mast, which was built in 1940 and served on the Sea Biscuit Shrimp Boat, to be used as a flag display. Visitors to the Gulf Shores Museum will surely walk away with a deeper understanding of this charming coastal community, and its rich history and culture.
